👄 The Wearable AI That Reads Your Lips

Cornell University researchers have developed EchoSpeech, a wearable artificial intelligence (AI) interface that recognizes silent speech through lip and mouth movements, potentially allowing patients unable to vocalize to regain their voices.

The low-power wearable recognizes up to 31 unvocalized commands, which can be transmitted in real-time to a smartphone.

The device is outfitted with microphones and speakers that analyze acoustic data with sonar and artificial intelligence algorithms, achieving 95% accuracy.

When used with a stylus, the researchers believe the technology, which will be presented at a computing conference in Hamburg, could replace keyboards and mice.

💢 Baidu Takes on Apple Over Fake Ernie Bot Apps

Baidu has filed lawsuits against Apple and app developers for distributing counterfeit copies of its artificial intelligence-powered Ernie bot app on Apple's app store.

The Chinese search engine giant has launched its Ernie bot in response to the ChatGPT chatbot developed in the United States.

Baidu has warned that until the official app is announced, any Ernie app on the App Store or other stores is a forgery.

Users who apply for and receive access codes are the only ones who can use the Ernie bot. Baidu has also issued a warning to anyone selling access codes.

🤝 Japan Considers AI Adoption Amid OpenAI CEO Visit

According to Japan's top government spokesperson, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno, the country is considering using artificial intelligence (AI) technology such as OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot if privacy and cybersecurity concerns are addressed.

The remarks came shortly before OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida during a visit to Japan, during which Altman stated that his company is "looking at opening an office."

Altman and Kishida also discussed the technology's benefits and how to mitigate its risks.

Matsuno added that Japan would continue to assess the feasibility of introducing AI to reduce the workload of government workers after determining how to respond to concerns such as data breaches.

🚨 Poking the AI Bear: The Risky Pastime of Jailbreaking Chatbots

Computer science students, tech workers, and anonymous Reddit users are jailbreaking AI chatbots to circumvent the restrictions built into the models that prevent them from being used in harmful ways or spreading hate speech.

Alex Albert, a 22-year-old University of Washington student, created Jailbreak Chat to collect and post prompts he's come up with or seen on other online forums. The prompts are intended to highlight the capabilities and limitations of AI models, but some, such as instructions for making weapons, may be dangerous.

OpenAI, the company behind the popular ChatGPT chatbot, encourages people to test the limits of its AI models but warns and may ban those who do so.

In 2023, as companies brace for greater economic volatility, there will be more pressure to not only do more with less but also demonstrate AI’s business value from the onset. Despite IT leaders recognizing AI's benefits in improved automation, insights, and efficiency, AI still requires more vital collaboration between the business and IT to ensure that the technology genuinely addresses business issues and needs.
