Researchers led by USC Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Joshua Yang have created a new type of chip with the best memory of any chip to date for edge AI.

The chips combine silicon with metal oxide memristors, which can process data where it is stored rather than sending it to dedicated processors.

The new technology, which focuses on activating atoms rather than electrons, uses fewer materials and allows for smaller chips while providing many more memory levels to help increase information density.

The researchers believe the technology will make high-powered technology more affordable and accessible for a wide range of applications.

Market Analysis

A Brown Brothers Harriman survey shows that 56% of professional investors plan to add AI- and robotics-focused ETF strategies to their portfolios this year, up from 46% in 2022.

According to Bloomberg Intelligence data, ETFs tracking robotics and AI received around $105 million in March, while other thematic strategies such as clean energy, electric cars, and cloud computing saw outflows.

With approximately $121 million in inflows this year, the $1.7 billion Global X Robotics & Artificial Intelligence ETF has led the inflows, with the fund up 24% year to date.

Nevertheless, the survey indicates that 48% of investors still intend to add cryptocurrency and digital asset-themed ETFs in 2023.

🚨 Regulation Risks: Why Stalling AI Development Could Backfire

Bloomberg Opinion columnist Tyler Cowen has criticized a recent petition calling for a voluntary six-month halt to artificial intelligence development. He contended that such a delay would politicize AI development, harm US national security, and potentially drive away top talent.

He added that a pause would accomplish very little. Cowen also believes that more testing and direct feedback are required to address safety concerns in new products.

Furthermore, there is no way to demonstrate that the pause can be lifted without drawing regulatory and congressional attention, which could be indefinitely extended.
