๐Ÿง ๐ŸŽž๏ธ Mind Movies: AI Unveils the Cinema of the Brain

A team from the National University of Singapore and the Chinese University of Hong Kong has developed an artificial intelligence tool capable of generating videos from brain scans.

This innovative study integrates functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with the deep learning model Stable Diffusion to generate high-quality videos.

Due to the nature of fMRI, which only captures images of brain activity every few seconds, the process is hampered by the potential for low-quality video images.

Nevertheless, the team developed the Mind-Video model, a system that gradually learns from brain signals and refines its comprehension, producing high-quality videos with a remarkable 85 percent accuracy rate.

This study paves the way for future applications, such as brain-computer interfaces and the tantalizing possibility of capturing thoughts and dreams.

Researchers like Daniel Oldis of the University of Texas at Austin are investigating this technology's potential for dream recording.

๐Ÿ“ฑ TikTok Taps AI for User Interactions

TikTok is investigating the potential of generative artificial intelligence by deploying a chatbot named Tako. Bloomberg observed screenshots demonstrating the bot's capacity to interact with users and respond to their questions. This feature represents TikTok's effort to improve user search and platform discovery. Currently, the chatbot is being evaluated in select markets.โ€‹

๐Ÿ›๏ธ G7's Global Gabfest on Future AI Governance

Officials from the Group of Seven (G7) nations will meet next week to discuss the challenges and ramifications of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT.

This meeting follows the recent establishment of the "Hiroshima AI process," an intergovernmental forum designed to facilitate discussion about the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence tools.

The inaugural meeting, scheduled for May 30, will cover intellectual property protection, disinformation, and AI technology governance. This pertinent discussion comes as tech regulators worldwide evaluate the impact of popular AI services like Microsoft-backed OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Concurrently, the European Union is advancing toward enacting the world's first significant artificial intelligence (AI) legislation, a development that encourages other governments to consider AI tool regulations.

๐ŸŒ Cashing in on AI Democracy: OpenAI's Grand Grant Scheme

OpenAI has announced the launch of a grant program to promote democratic decision-making processes in artificial intelligence.

The program offers ten grants of $100,000 to finance experiments exploring the possibility of an AI system governed democratically.

The objective is to create prototypes that can answer critical questions about AI's limits, aiming to learn from these experiments and lay the groundwork for a future, more comprehensive endeavor.

The grants, which OpenAI's non-profit organization funds, seek to encourage a process characterized by representative participation, thoughtful deliberation, and open decision-making. The announcement's timing has raised suspicions, despite OpenAI's assertion that the program is unrelated to its commercial interests.

Successful applicants must develop a concept involving at least 500 participants, publish a public report by October 20, and release the source code for their work as open source by the deadline of June 24.
