🌥️ From Carbon Bytes to Climate Solutions: AI's Climate Invention Journey

In an article published in Nature Climate Change, Vilhelm Verendel examines the relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) and climate inventions by analyzing over 6 million US patents from 1976 to 2019. The research indicates that AI is frequently referenced in patents for transportation, energy, and industrial production. AI occurs more often in highly cited adaptation and transportation patents than in other climate mitigation fields.

When considering all technologies, AI-climate patents were found to be associated with 30-100% more subsequent inventions. However, AI-climate patents led to more citations from outside the climate field than non-AI climate patents. This emphasizes the significance of tracking increased invention activity and the areas where subsequent inventions emerge.

Patent data are used to examine trends in AI and climate technologies, but the limitations of patents as data source are acknowledged. Particular inventions may not be patentable, and some AI inventions may be available via open-source culture or protected by secrecy.

Despite these limitations, the analysis offers valuable insights into the function of AI in technologies for climate change mitigation and adaptation.

🤖 Google's Multilingual Marvel Takes AI Language Models by Storm

At the annual I/O conference, Google CEO Sundar Pichai introduced the company's most recent large language model, PaLM 2.

PaLM 2 powers over 25 products and features and is available in multiple sizes, such as Gecko, which is lightweight enough to function offline on mobile devices.

PaLM 2 models excel in logic and reasoning, comprehend more than one hundred languages, and comprehensively comprehend scientific and mathematical concepts.

Additionally, domain-specific variants of PaLM 2 have been developed, such as SEC-PaLM for security use cases and Med-PaLM 2 for medical knowledge.

Compared to the original model, Med-PaLM 2 has demonstrated a 9-fold reduction in incorrect reasoning, approximating the performance of clinician experts on questions similar to those found on medical licensing exams.

PaLM 2 is designed to aid global developers in collaborating across languages and disciplines.

⚒️ Japan's AI Crusader: Digital Minister Tackles Labor Shortage with Trustworthy Tech

As G-7 digital ministers recently agreed on an action plan to promote "trustworthy AI" and the European Union moves toward regulating AI tools, Japan's Digital Minister Taro Kono stresses the need for greater AI adoption to offset labor shortages caused by a declining population. Kono shared his insights in a conversation with Kurumi Mori of Bloomberg.

👷 The Dark Side of AI's Human Labor

The public's fascination with superintelligent AI depicted in popular culture detracts from the dangers and exploitation of human laborers in developing AI systems.

Silicon Valley's large corporations construct numerous AI systems to develop autonomous systems to replace human labor.

This pursuit has resulted in a global underclass performing "ghost work" in precarious conditions, propelling the development of artificial intelligence.

Tech companies that rely on independent contractors, such as data labelers and content moderators, contribute to the exploitation of underpaid employees worldwide, who are frequently recruited from impoverished populations.

Zoom in: Despite this exploitation, labor issues are not central to AI ethics discourse. These authors argue that AI ethics discussions should prioritize support for transnational worker organizing.

Check this: According to a TIME investigation, OpenAI's ChatGPT, a potent AI chatbot, was made less toxic using outsourced Kenyan laborers earning less than $2 per hour.

OpenAI sent tens of thousands of text fragments to Sama, a San Francisco-based company with employees in Kenya, Uganda, and India, to construct a safety system that detects and filters toxic language.

The take-home pay for data labelers ranged between $1.32 and $2 per hour, depending on seniority and performance.

📝 Circleback: Simplify Meeting Management with AI

⚙️ One-Way Ticket to Neural Network Town: What Is a Feedforward Neural Network?

A feedforward neural network is an artificial neural network in which information flows in a single direction, from the input layer through any hidden layers to the output layer. There are no connections or feedback circuits between nodes within the same layer or between layers that are not adjacent. This implies that the output of each layer is solely dependent on the output of the layer beneath it and the weights associated with the connections between layers.

Among other applications, feedforward neural networks are extensively employed for pattern recognition, classification, and regression.

-Tristan Harris, co-founder and executive director Center for Humane Technology

Humane technology starts with an honest appraisal of human nature. We need to do the uncomfortable thing of looking more closely at ourselves.
