🦾 Robots Get a Grip: The Rise of the Dexterous Touch

Researchers from Columbia Engineering have created a highly dexterous robot hand that combines sophisticated touch sensing with motor learning algorithms to accomplish a high level of manipulation skills.

Without visual feedback, the hand can perform challenging tasks, such as rotating an irregularly shaped object while maintaining a stable grip, relying solely on touch sensing.

It also operates in the dark, does not require external cameras, and is immune to illumination and occlusion issues.

According to the researchers, this level of dexterity will allow for new applications in logistics, material handling, advanced manufacturing, and assembly.

The hand was constructed with tactile digits based on optics that provide precise contact localization.

Motor learning algorithms were used to teach the intricate hand tasks, and deep reinforcement learning was used to simulate one year of practice in just a few hours of real-time.

The ultimate aim is to combine abstract intelligence with embodied intelligence, enabling physically adept robots to perform tasks in the real world based on semantic understanding.

The research manuscript has been accepted for publication in July 2023 at the Robotics: Science and Systems Conference.

🚨 Data Leakage Drama: Samsung Puts a Lid on Generative AI Tool 🧰

In response to a data leak incident, Samsung Electronics has implemented a prohibition on the use of generative AI tools such as ChatGPT by its employees.

The company discovered that sensitive code was uploaded to the platform inadvertently, raising concerns about data security and the possibility of disclosure to other users.

Based on a survey conducted by Samsung, 65 percent of respondents viewed AI services as a security concern.

As such, Samsung issued an internal memo prohibiting generative AI systems on company-owned devices and networks.

Additionally, employees are instructed not to share company-related or sensitive information on their personal devices.

Samsung is currently concentrating on developing its own AI tools and instituting security measures to prevent the upload of sensitive data to external services.

The prohibition reflects a broader trend of significant corporations expressing security concerns regarding generative AI technology.

⚖️ G7 Ministers Master the AI Act: Finding the Right Balance for Regulation

Group of Seven (G7) digital ministers have agreed to adopt "risk-based" regulation for artificial intelligence (AI) while maintaining an open and conducive environment for AI development.

The joint statement issued after a two-day meeting in Japan establishes an essential precedent for regulating artificial intelligence technologies among major nations.

Concerns regarding privacy and security dangers associated with ChatGPT have prompted governments to take action.

The G7 ministers intend to discuss topics such as governance, intellectual property rights, transparency, and confronting disinformation related to AI tools that generate new knowledge.

In the meantime, the European Union (EU) has reached an initial consensus on a draft AI Act, which includes copyright protection measures for generative AI.

Japan, the current chair of the G7, favors flexible governance over preemptive regulation of AI technology.

At the G7 summit in late May, world leaders will have the opportunity to continue discussing artificial intelligence regulations.

💰 Venture Capital's Big Guns Back OpenAI: Smaller Rivals Left in the Dust

OpenAI, the company behind the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, has raised an additional $300 million from Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital, among others.

This comes after Microsoft's $10 billion investment in OpenAI. The article suggests that OpenAI's significant venture capital backers will make it difficult for the company's competitors to find investors with deep pockets with which to compete.

In order to maintain good relationships and access exclusive deals, investors generally avoid funding direct competitors.

The cost of training AI models and the scarcity of venture capital funding exacerbates lesser competitors' difficulties.

While some competitors may pursue funding from other tech titans, OpenAI's early foothold in Silicon Valley could provide it with a substantial advantage in the AI race.
