🦠 Cough Up the Truth: Study Shows AI Is a Poor Predictor of COVID-19

A recent study in partnership with multiple universities by academics from The Alan Turing Institute and the Royal Statistical Society discovered that AI algorithms to diagnose COVID-19 based on cough sounds are less accurate than previously thought.

The study tested the efficacy of cough-detecting AI models with user-reported symptoms and demographic data from over 67,000 users.

The researchers discovered that, compared to user-reported systems, AI models brought minimal benefit in predicted accuracy.

According to the study, coughs are not a valid biomarker for COVID-19, which underlines the limitations of machine learning in healthcare.

The findings call into question several commercial attempts, such as Fujitsu's Cough in a Box app.

While the study does not rule out the possibility of cough detection in the future for diagnosing other respiratory viruses, it emphasizes the need for caution when it comes to healthcare AI, as previous examples have shown overpromising and underdelivering.

⚠️ AI Chatbots Run Wild on Dozens of Fake News Websites

A report by NewsGuard exposes the existence of 49 AI-generated news websites masquerading as legitimate sources, raising concerns about the possibility of fraudulent practices.

These websites, powered by artificial intelligence chatbots such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and possibly Alphabet's Google Bard, cover various topics, including breaking news, lifestyle advice, and sponsored content.

None of these websites disclose their use of artificial intelligence chatbots. The report details chatbots generating fraudulent information, such as fabricated news stories and obituaries.

Numerous websites function as content farms, disseminating low-quality articles to generate advertising revenue. They have a global presence and publish in multiple languages.

Some websites use advertising strategies such as "guest posting" and social media following development.

Over fifty percent of websites generate revenue through programmatic advertisements, posing challenges for Google, whose ad technology may have been utilized on these sites.

Gordon Crovitz, the CEO of NewsGuard, emphasizes the need for AI models to be trained against news fabrication.

Google responded by stating that it evaluates content quality, not how it was created, and removes advertisements from sites that violate its policies.

The proliferation of AI-generated news websites raises concerns about the deteriorating quality of online information ecosystems.

🚨 ChatGPT Unleashed in Italy Again: OpenAI Tackles Regulator's Data Concerns

OpenAI has reinstated access to its ChatGPT chatbot for Italian users after resolving the Italian Data Protection Authority's (Garante) concerns regarding user privacy and data collection.

Garante had launched an investigation into the methods used to collect confidential information and the absence of age-restriction filters.

OpenAI, with Microsoft's assistance, temporarily disabled access to ChatGPT in response.

OpenAI has now provided explanations on data collection and usage, enhanced the transparency of its privacy policies and opt-out forms, and added a condition for EU users to object to using their data.

Additionally, an age verification tool has been implemented for Italian consumers. The company has expressed gratitude for Garante's cooperation and looks forward to further discussions.

The Italian government has confirmed that access to ChatGPT has been granted.

💼 German Labor Minister Optimistic about AI's Potential to Create Jobs

The German Minister of Labor, Hubertus Heil, believes that artificial intelligence (AI) will create more employment than it eliminates and help alleviate Germany's labor shortage.

He stated that, based on current observations, there will be plenty of available jobs in the future.

Heil stated that he does not support bans on chatbots like ChatGPT but emphasized the significance of comprehending the data used to train AI tools.

He emphasized that this comprehension prevents the proliferation of conspiracy theories and AI systems from producing undesirable outcomes.

🔊 The Write Stuff: Natural Language Generation and AI's Way with Words

Natural Language Generation (NLG) is a subfield of artificial intelligence (AI) that generates natural-sounding text or speech.

Utilizing algorithms and machine learning techniques to transmute structured data into coherent and comprehensible narratives.

NLG systems analyze data inputs, extract pertinent information, and generate human-readable text that conveys the intended message or information in a human-comprehensible language.

NLG has numerous applications, including content generation, report writing, chatbots for customer service, virtual assistants, automated journalism, and personalized messaging.

It allows machines to communicate effectively with humans by generating contextually and linguistically appropriate language.
