🤖 Remote Collaboration Gets a Robotic Twist

Cornell University researchers have developed the ReMotion robot, which allows remote users to occupy physical space and mirror their movements in real-time.

The robot, equipped with a monitor, omnidirectional wheels, and game-engine software, imitates the user's actions using information captured by a device called NeckFace, which monitors head and body movements.

ReMotion, in contrast to manual telepresence robotics, enables rapid, dynamic interactions without distracting the user.

Study participants reported improved connections with remote teammates and increased shared attention compared to extant telerobotic systems.

Presently, ReMotion supports two users in a one-on-one remote context, but the researchers plan to investigate asymmetrical scenarios in the future.

According to the team, reMotion has potential applications in virtual collaborative environments, classrooms, and other educational contexts.

The National Science Foundation and the Nakajima Foundation supported the research.

Italy has allocated 30 million euros ($33 million) to improve the digital skills of unemployed individuals and employees whose livelihoods are threatened by the increasing adoption of automation and artificial intelligence (AI).

The Fondo per la Repubblica Digitale (FRD), a body created by the Rome government in 2021 in response to data indicating that 54 percent of Italians aged 16 to 74 lack fundamental digital skills, has taken this action.

The budget will be split into two sections: The remaining 20 million euros will help unemployed and economically inactive individuals acquire digital skills to boost their employability.

According to the FRD, various industries, including transportation and logistics, office support and administration, production, services, and retail, could be threatened by automation.

The pervasive adoption of AI and automation and the rapid development of tools such as ChatGPT have prompted legislators and regulators worldwide to pay greater attention to their potential effects, including employment, national security, and education.

⚖️ Catching up with the Future: US Lawmakers Confront AI Regulation Uncertainty

Legislators in the United States are debating how to regulate artificial intelligence (AI) technology in light of mounting concerns about its potential misuse.

Divergent opinions exist regarding whether regulation should apply to AI developers or companies that use AI to interact with consumers, as well as whether it should cover only critical sectors, such as medical diagnostics, or all AI technologies that could endanger the lives and livelihoods of people.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, will first appear before a Senate committee to discuss these issues. Others, such as Democratic Senator Michael Bennet, favor a values-based regulation approach emphasizing privacy, civil liberties, and rights.

OpenAI has proposed establishing an agency dubbed the Office for AI Security and Infrastructure Security (OASIS) to increase oversight.

Yet, some Republicans may oppose AI regulation out of concern for micromanagement by the government. As legislators endeavor to keep up with AI advancements, tech titans work to prevent rash reactions.

Despite a lack of consensus, experts concur that Congress must act expeditiously.
