🤖 No More 'Bot' Papers: Unmasking AI’s Academic Writing

A study conducted by researchers at the University of Kansas and published in the journal Cell Reports Physical Science reveals that AI-generated academic science writing can be identified with a greater than 99 percent accuracy.

The research team created a tool trained on a dataset of 64 "perspective" articles written by human scientists and 128 similar articles generated by ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot.

The team identified specific patterns, such as the predictability of AI text and the complexity of human paragraph structures, as distinguishing factors between AI and human writing.

The tool was determined to be 100% accurate at identifying entire AI-generated articles and 92% accurate at identifying AI-written paragraphs within an article.

The researchers intend to evaluate the model's efficacy on larger datasets and diverse types of academic writing.

Despite its success, the model was not intended to detect AI-generated student essays, although similar methods could be used for this purpose.

🌐 South Korea Aims High in Global AI Standoff

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, is scheduled to meet with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol as South Korea seeks to improve its competitiveness in its domestic artificial intelligence (AI) sector.

This visit follows Altman's global tour, during which he met with legislators and national leaders to discuss the opportunities and challenges presented by artificial intelligence.

The rise of generative AI, such as ChatGPT, has prompted a global drive for safety-related legislative measures. As part of this global trend, South Korea is awaiting parliamentary approval for its new AI regulations, which are viewed as less restrictive than the forthcoming AI Act of the European Union.

With its emphasis on fostering local AI development, South Korea is one of the few countries with its foundation models for AI, a field dominated by the United States and China.

Local technology companies such as Naver, Kakao, and LG are investigating niche or specialized markets that major technology companies in the United States or China have not targeted.

According to the head of LG AI Research, Korean companies must acquire vertical AI specialized technology to excel in the global AI ecosystem.

📜 U.S. Senators Tackle the AI Frontier

U.S. senators have proposed two bipartisan artificial intelligence (AI)-related bills, reflecting the expanding interest and concerns surrounding the technology.

The first bill, introduced by Senators Gary Peters, Mike Braun, and James Lankford, would require U.S. government agencies to notify individuals when AI is being used to interact with them and establish a system for individuals to appeal decisions made by AI.

The second bill, introduced by Senators Michael Bennet, Mark Warner, and Todd Young, seeks to establish an Office of Global Competition Analysis to ensure the United States maintains its competitive edge in artificial intelligence and other strategic technologies.

Before these legislative endeavors, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer scheduled a series of briefings on artificial intelligence, including a classified session on defense and intelligence issues.

🏛️ ChatGPT in the Courtroom: Lawyer Pleads Ignorance, Not Guilt

Steven Schwartz, a New York attorney, has asked U.S. District Judge P. Kevin Castel for leniency after inadvertently submitting a court brief containing fabricated legal precedents generated by ChatGPT. Schwartz argued that he did not intend to deceive anyone and was unaware that the artificial intelligence tool could generate fraudulent case citations and court opinions in the face of potential penalties.
