👦👧 Kids Get Smart About Smart Speakers: Alexa Beats Roomba in Emotional IQ 💡

Despite the perceived difference in intelligence, children believe smart speaker Alexa has more human-like thoughts and emotions than its floor-dwelling cousin Roomba, an autonomous vacuum, according to a new study by Duke developmental psychologists.

The study gathered 127 children aged four to eleven and asked them to watch a 20-second clip of each technology before answering questions about them.

Regardless of the perceived abilities of the two technologies, children of all ages agreed that hitting or yelling at the machines was wrong.

However, older children were more likely to report that attacking technology would be slightly more acceptable.

🔊 Alibaba Enters ChatGPT Race with AI Model for Smart Speakers and Chat Software

Alibaba has announced that it will incorporate its new artificial intelligence (AI) model, dubbed Tongyi Qianwen, into Amazon Echo-like intelligent speakers and its office chat software to provide a Chinese market competitor to ChatGPT.

According to the company's CEO, Daniel Zhang, the model will also be incorporated into all of Alibaba's products and services in the "near future."

SenseTime Group and Baidu have made similar announcements as companies race to build the next-generation AI platform for the world's largest internet market.

Investors have applauded domestic efforts to develop ChatGPT alternatives but are concerned about consistent access to the high-end chips required to create large-scale AI models.

👲 China to Regulate Generative AI Services: ChatGPT-like Bots Face Security Review

China's Cyberspace Administration intends to require generative AI services to undergo a security review before they can go live, casting doubt on the ChatGPT-like bots unveiled by tech companies such as Alibaba and Baidu.

Following the draft guidelines, service providers must ensure that content is accurate, respects the intellectual property, and does not discriminate or endanger security.

The CAC's action adds to Beijing's growing efforts to control the rapid growth of generative AI, which generates original content from simple user prompts.

💻 Beyond Computer Vision: The Inflection Point of Generative AI 🤖

Recent advances in generative AI models have reached a tipping point due to the profound concepts of deep learning and big data. While computer vision initially inspired AI, we should now focus on developing AI that can see what humans cannot.

It is critical to understand the need to assess the risks and potential biases in generative AI models and determine whether an image was generated using AI.

Furthermore, generative AI models may help healthcare providers and improve patient outcomes. Undoubtedly, we must know how generative AI will disrupt our lives and communities.

Everyone understands the value of automation, and in our software-defined world, almost everything can be automated. However, the decision point or trigger for automation is still one of the trickier elements. This is where AI will increasingly come in: AI can make more intelligent, less brittle decisions than automation’s traditional 'if-this-then-that' rules.
