🧪 From Code to Catalysts: AI's Protein Engineering Breakthrough

Scientists have designed an AI system called ProGen, which makes artificial enzymes from scratch. The exciting thing is that some of these enzymes work as well as their naturally occurring counterparts. The machine learning model uses natural language processing to assemble amino acid sequences into artificial proteins. This technology could revolutionize the field of protein engineering, and it may become more potent than the Nobel-prize-winning protein design technology.

They fed the amino acid sequences of 280 million proteins into the machine learning model to create the model. They fine-tuned the model by priming it with 56,000 sequences from five lysozyme families. The team selected 100 sequences to test based on how close they resembled the natural proteins.

The AI-generated enzymes showed activity even when only 31.4% of their sequence resembled any known natural protein. The AI could also learn how the enzymes should be shaped simply from studying the raw sequence data. The atomic structures of the artificial proteins looked just as they should, although the sequences were like nothing seen before.

The design choices for proteins are almost limitless, and given the possibilities, it's remarkable that the model can so quickly generate working enzymes. We're entering into a new era of protein design, and this is a versatile new tool available to protein engineers. We're looking forward to the therapeutic applications.

🛬Microsoft Germany's CTO Announces Arrival of GPT-4

Andreas Braun, Microsoft Germany's CTO, revealed that GPT-4 is set to arrive next week at the "AI in Focus - Digital Kickoff" event held on March 9, 2023. Marianne Janik, the CEO of Microsoft Germany, also spoke at the event about the potential business disruption caused by the current AI advancements and ChatGPT, which she described as an "iPhone moment."

GPT-4 is a rumored multimodal AI model that has the potential to unlock numerous possibilities, such as the ability to create videos from text. Holger Braun, Microsoft Germany's Chief Technologist of Business Development AI & Emerging Technologies, believes this paradigm shift will bring about "totally different possibilities." GPT-4 is expected to translate text into various media formats, including graphics, music, and videos. It can even generate text that sounds like human speech.

GPT-4 is anticipated to be 100 times more powerful than its predecessor, GPT-3, and better at creating computer code. However, OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, cautions against expecting Artificial Global Intelligence (AGI). He also refutes the notion that GPT-4 contains 100 trillion parameters.

Most large AI models are under-optimized, with the cost of training being a significant factor. Microsoft and OpenAI have shown that GPT-3 can be enhanced by training it on appropriate hyperparameters. They discovered that a 6.7B GPT-3 model with tuned hyperparameters performed better than a 13B GPT-3 model.

GPT-4 will be utilized for various language applications, including code generation, text summarization, translation, classification, chatbots, and grammar correction. The new model is expected to be more secure, less prejudiced, accurate, and better aligned. It will also be cost-effective and durable.

👲 Chasing China's Tail: US Government Pours Money into AI Research 💵

The US government is investing in artificial intelligence (AI) research and development to set the US on a path to compete with China. The National Science Foundation and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy established a task force to implement a National AI Research Resource (NAIRR), which aims to diversify assets previously accessible by only powerful technology companies and universities.

The NAIRR is a shared research infrastructure that will increase access for a wider variety of AI researchers and students to educational tools, high-quality data, and support. The goal behind providing such a resource is to overcome the access divide, reaping the benefits of more extraordinary brainpower and more diverse perspectives and experiences applied to developing the future of AI technology and its role in our society. The task force estimated the NAIRR would need a $2.6 billion budget and a six-year implementation plan.

President Joe Biden highlighted US investments in AI during his State of the Union address, reiterating the need to stay competitive with China. The rise of the next generation of AI tools like ChatGPT is also behind the federal government's interest in understanding and funding AI research.
